Rethinking Schools supports Change

Rethinking schools Vol. 1 is a revision of an older edition. I previewed the new volume and used it for my Foundations Course with an emphasis on social justice. The articles are short, provocative and compliment a more rigorous text and a collection of readings. As a supplemental text Rethinking Schools, Vol. 1 works very well to engage my Teacher Candidates in thoughtful discussion and critical analysis of more traditional texts. The articles are written from the practitioner point of view, ranging from early education to high school. I will use this text again.Resilience Education

Sailer's Differential Diagnosis >> Ferri's

Sailer's Differential Diagnosis is MUCH better than Ferri's Differential Diagnosis. The lists in Sailer for almost all the differentials are much longer. Even though they are much longer, they are still easier to navigate because they are divided into practicable subheadings. Sailer is also physically smaller and the cover is white so you can write your name on it. Furthermore, it is not as if the lists in Ferri's focus down on sinister or common differentials either.

I noted that a nurse practitioner found it better than three other DD books. I may be that she acually preferred the shorter lists. As an office-based psychiatrist I am interested in longer lists. Actually, thinking of you more physical emergency types, I looked up 'hypoxia' and it was not even in Ferri's index!. 'Hypoxemia - arterial' was in Sailer. Sailer gave a differential of 20 according to things like restriction of lung function and distribution impairment. Sailer has won this bout, 10 seconds into the very first round, by KNOCK OUT.

P.S. The only differentials for fever are as follows. 1) Fever with rash, 2) Fever with jaundice, 3) fever in returned travellers. So, if you have a straight forward PUO, it doesn't have a diffential list! Can you belive that? Is there something I'm missing here?

Good overview of genre

This book was produced as a companion to a traveling exhibition by the Smithsonian Institute about
American music. It is bilingual, with English and Spanish text on opposing pages. This is appropriate for the subject matter, which is the fusing of two branches of the African diaspora and their respective European influences. American Jazz absorbed the harmonic complexity of European music, but lost some of the rhythmic complexity of African music. Latin music retained the rhythmic complexity, but was more harmonically simple, albeit influenced by the rich Spanish folk tradition and it's Moorish influence. The blending of these 2 branches enriched both genres, and strengthened their respective weaknesses. It is a good overview of the history of Latin Jazz, and all of the major musicians are spotlighted. I wish that there was an accompanying CD with the book to hear a sample of the many artists profiled within. I guess I'll have to spend more money on Amazon to purchase some of these records!

Fantastic Overview of Latin Jazz

This book explores the beginning of the combination of latin music and jazz by looking as far back as the 1800s and early 1900s when ragtime was morphing into jazz and latin musicians were meeting jazz musicians in Cuba, New Orleans and eventually the great melting pot of NYC. The book takes you on a fun journey up to the early 2000s. Not comprehensive but well done and easy to read. Especially enjoyable with the companion CD. Highly recommended.

GMO: What it Does to Us

This is not really a review of this book. I would like to emphasize the merit Fritjof Capra has, as a mainstream scientist, to have unveiled the negative effects of genetically modified organisms, commonly called GMO. There are indeed interesting political and social hidden connections that Capra unveils in this book, while admittedly this subject is not the main tenet of the book. But for me personally it was revelatory which is why I decided to write this review only about this part of the book, leaving it to others to review it in its general focus.

There are probably still people around who are fond of biotechnology, but I guess they just ignore the facts, and their knowledge is for the most part taken from the huge amount of propaganda material. Was it only for this enlightening information, the present book is worth its price as it daringly unveils the hidden facts and tells the truth! For I was one of those ignorant scholars, and in my case this weighs especially heavy against me, for I was trained as an international lawyer. But honestly, I never heard of the matter at university. It was through the Internet, through Wikipedia, that I first found information about it, some years ago.

Now let us honestly ask: why do we need biotechnology? I guess certain people, corporations and their consorts need it for making huge amounts of money. But is it tolerable in a democracy that all suffer from the side effects of technologies that enrich a few? I learnt as a law student that such a kind of system is called an oligarchy, the reign of an elite. So I am seriously asking how we ever came to say that we are living in a democracy?

Why do we need superpigs? It seems to me that they are the result of quantitative thinking, a primacy of quantity over quality, and this for the obvious reason of maximizing profits. This is a good example for the fact that we live in what has been called ‘the corporate society’, as the prototype of a society in which major corporations dictate the standards the government is going to follow and to enact as laws.

As a trained lawyer, I can clearly see that we are facing currently a challenge to legally codify these new technologies—lest, as it were, they are going to codify us, entraining us in a turbulence of faits �tablis, and then the law will leap behind the actual developments. But the law should better accompany the research step by step so as to be updated with the explosive growth of these very heavily funded research disciplines.

Not an easy read, but very educational

This is a highly intelligent book that applies deep philosophical insights and the tenets of complexity theory to the natural world, the social system, and the global economic system. The average layperson will find it mentally challenging, but enlightening as well. Particularly interesting to me was the discussion of epigenetics, which shows that evolution is not a simple function of genes mutating, but a complex and little-understood interaction between genes and the individual organism's environment and personal choices. I agree with the author's view that the unchecked greed of the global financial systems will surely lead to the utter destruction of our natural environment, and the Enron debaucle shows just how removed from reality the assignment of a company's "worth" is in a financial system that is hopelessly tied up in speculations. The changes required to fix these problems would be nothing less than a revolutionary overhaul of the world's economic and political policies, and I do not share the author's optimism that this could happen merely by the action of grassroots organizations, no matter how organized they have become. It will take a global collapse for this to happen, because historically humans only make changes of that magnitude in the face of a crisis...we are not focused on prevention, especially if it means those with money will lose it. This is the only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5...Capra is just too idealistic.

This is an eye opening book

As in Capra's other books, he provides a easy to understand and compelling look at living systems. In this book he takes a substantial leap forward in providing a broad based look at the evolution of the field and the impact on systems that we are now experiencing in our world. He also provides examples and references to successful examples of what we can do if we have the will to do so. What a powerful reference and one that I refer to regularly. If there was but one book to understand living systems and how the science has evolved and the impact on our world, please read this book. I can not recommend it more highly.

Was planning to go for Sybase ASE SQL Developer Professional certification and looking for an A to Z book. Though I have been working in Sybase for past 3 years but I think I am still a beginner. Because in Sybase you can't become a professional in 3 years, Well.... that's my understanding. So as a beginner I was looking for a book with a lot of examples and simple illustrations and this book offers both. I find it straight and easy to dissolve book.

I would definitely recommend this book for all those, going for the certification and even for the beginners.

Certainly you'll have a great time reading this book. It's complete, so well written, easy to learn and
all the chapter have summary page and a practice test after each chapter(which I liked the most), this practice test help so much to train what you learned before. I'm sure that is the best and of course COMPLETE book( for Sybase ASE Dev certification) of the world.

Also, note sure why some reviewers have written(only 1-2) bad comments about this book that this book does not cover DBA topics etc ... but I believe, author never promised that this book is for DBAs. so its not book's fault :)

I recommend you have Sybase ASE env close to you. This will make easy and efficient your study because the author do the concepts very clear and then show some examples.

Excellent Treatment of the Problem of Evil!!!

The classic “problem” of evil is laid out well by D.A. Carson when he writes, “If God is both omnipotent and perfectly good, how can he permit evil? If he is willing but not able to check the suffering, then he is not omnipotent; if he is able but unwilling, he is not perfectly good. The implication is that the very existence of evil calls into question the existence of God.” This “problem” however, is specifically a problem for those who believe in a good and omnipotent God. Carson explains that, “If there is no God, and no criterion of goodness outside the universe itself; if all that happens is simply the wastage of evolution… what rational person should feel any outrage before ostensible ‘evils’ at all” (Carson, 27). In other words, for an atheist to feel outrage over evil would seem to be quite inconsistent with their overall worldview.
So why does God not use his omnipotent power to utterly destroy the evil that exists in the world? Furthermore, if a good God created all that is, why does evil exist in the world at all? Does the fact that there is Evil in creation make God the creator of Evil? Among the many different ways that Christians have sought to answer these questions over the last 2000 years, The Wonder of the Cross by Rick Shenk stands out as a clear and helpful guide that sheds light on these thorny questions. Shenk does not pretend to have the complete answer to all the questions. In fact, he believes that “this is a problem without an exhaustive solution” (153). Yet his approach does not merely posit the cross of Christ as “consolation” for our experiences with evil. He believes that the cross itself presents us with the theodicy for answering the classic problem of Evil. In short, Shenk’s Thesis is that “Evil and suffering is destroying Evil and Suffering to bring about ‘Conforming Freedom’ for God’s people in the final state” (11). So why does an omnipotent and good God not use his power to obliterate evil? Well, biblically speaking, he did, and it did not work. The flood waters that destroyed the world of evil could not cleanse Noah’s heart (Gen 6-9). Shenk’s answer is that “Evil and Suffering is the God ordained instrument used against Evil itself” (210). Shenk agrees with Henri Blocher that nowhere do we see this more clearly than at the cross. Blocher explains that God “makes the supreme crime, the murder of the only righteous person, the very operation that abolishes sin” (Blocher, 132). This is the case because, “The greatest evil in the world is death and the greatest victory is the death of death” (Shenk, 151).
The second part of Shenk’s thesis is that the ultimate goal of the victory at the cross is to bring about the “conforming freedom” of God’s people. Shenk understands “conforming freedom” to be a state in which God’s people are finally “free to obey God without restraint or reserve. It is not absolute power to contrary; it is wanting to please God at every moment” (178). This is the essence of what it means to be completely conformed into the image of Christ who never sins (Rom 8:29), and to be in a glorified resurrection state. Shenk argues convincingly that Romans 8 leads us to see suffering as the necessary means of glorification. In his own words, “God brought creation and human willful-creatures on a necessary journey through futility (the inability to live out our created purpose) so that freedom (the ability to perfectly live out our created purpose) might be fully granted to his people” (183). Suffering and evil is thus the means by which God conforms his people to Christ and destroys sin within them.
Key to Shenk’s thesis is his understanding of Evil and Suffering as “a subordinate-metaphysical necessity” (11). For Him, Evil is “both the intrinsic problem and the instrumental solution in God’s economy” (Ibid). One of the difficulties with saying that God “uses” Evil “instrumentally” to defeat Evil, is the question I posed above: where did the Evil God uses come from, and how can God not be evil to use it? Shenk agrees with Augustine who famously argued for the “Privative” nature of Evil. He lays out Augustine’s argument as follows: 1) Evil is not a substance because substances were created good. (2) No substance exists that was not created. (3) So, as a substance, evil does not have existence. (4) But evil, though not a substance, exists because the human will does not align with God’s goodness (Shenk, 74-75). This understanding of evil need not take away a belief in the reality of evil. Evil exists, but it is a sub-existence arising not as a created substance, but as a privation of all that is good in the world God created.
How then did this privative evil find Adam as its first human host? Would not the fact that Adam was created with the potential to fall seem to imply that his will was not created good? Shenk argues that though Adam was created good, his “heart was not tethered to God’s perfection” (198). In other words, God himself is the fountain of all goodness, but Adam himself was not a fountain of goodness. He was created with the capacity to freely choose to not worship God. Although God ultimately planned to work conforming freedom in the lives of his people, it seems that this freedom could not be given “to his people in one act” (256). Following Augustine again, Shenk posits four “stages” of Freedom God has used to bring those he has chosen to redeem into a state of conforming freedom: Adam’s freedom to sin or to not sin, the freedom of a sinner to only sin, the freedom of a believer to sin or to not sin, and finally, conforming freedom (234). Ultimately then, Adam fell because God created him able to fall, and ordained that he would fall. In Shenk’s words, “I affirm God as the primary cause of evil, mediated by a secondary and immediate cause” (189). Another way of saying this is that “God is responsible for his world as he created it and nothing occurs that he did not forsee or permit – and in a significant sense, will” (190). Having chosen to create a word in which he would bestow conforming freedom on His people, God necessarily ordained to actualize a world in which evil would find Adam as its host, plunging the whole race into death so that God himself would have to enter creation and die to accomplish the death of death. Evil is not simply a tool God uses to accomplish good ends, but more specifically, it is the enemy God chose to fight when he ordained this world. And the only way it can be effectively fought in His people is by making it commit suicide at the cross and at every subsequent instance of suffering it brings against his people.
I believe that Shenk’s approach to the problem of Evil is particularly helpful in three ways: 1) It does not pretend to answer all the questions and thus go beyond what scripture has given us. 2) Shenk does not shy away from saying some hard things about the Subordinate – Metaphysical necessity of Evil given God’s intensions for obtaining a bride for his Son and communicating his Divine fullness to that bride. Perhaps, for reasons unbeknownst to us, the reason God chose to actualize this world, as opposed to a world free from evil, is because His self-glorifying goal of bringing a people to the conforming freedom of continual delight in Himself would have been unachievable in a world without suffering and evil – in a world without the cross. In the Bible, God does not seem as eager as we are to clear His name from the suffering that happens in the world. One significant example is in Genesis 50:20 where Joseph tells his brothers, “you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” Here we see a classic example where God is said to use evil against evil – bringing about the good of his people Israel. 3) Shenk’s book leads us to posit the central theme of the Bible – the Death and Resurrection of the Son of God – as the central answer to all our problems.
One practical application of this book for someone who aspires to be a pastor is to meditate more deeply on the cross than ever before. If God can use that horror of that event to accomplish the death of all death and the salvation and eternal joy of untold millions of people, how much more can he use these “light and momentary” afflictions to kill my own sin and produce in me an “eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor 4:17). I want to daily apply the power of the cross to my own soul so that I will be ready to bring its glory into the hospital bedrooms and to the funerals of my future flock.

Rick Shenk writes what I believe is an extremely well researched, challenging and and critically important book to wrestle with in respect to how evil plays a role in the design of what God created. This is an extremely complex topic for us all to wrestle with for people of faith or those who use the development or existence of evil as counter to how God and Christ can be considered good or worth following. However, in perfect design you see how evil is conquered by itself at the cross.

This book is full of historical views of the subject of evil and how it plays out in the story of Christ and in life today. This book is written in a manner where Rick takes us on a journey of his hypothesis and he rightly and humbly works through each point using scripture as the base and the works/thoughts of scholars as well.

In the end, I agree with his conclusion that evil is defeated by itself through Christ's death "at the cross, evil is conquered by evil" The hope we have in life is that Christ gives us forgiveness, salvation and defeats evil at the cross.

This book is challenging in subject and takes dedicated time to be intentional about learning and understanding the points being made but it truly develops and pushes thinking beyond your normal books but set against the topic of evil this makes a great deal of logic and sense. I greatly enjoyed the journey through the book and the conclusion. I would recommend this to anyone who is challenged by this subject as a believer or not.

Excellent Book! Shenk's writing is clear, well-organized and thought provoking!

Dr. Shenk's writing is clear, well-organized, and thought provoking. He uses a plethora of Scripture, and makes his case with humility. I was very excited to read this book! After I began, I couldn't put it down. The sound theology and premises considered in this book can serve as an encouragement to Christians on how to persevere through pain and suffering and use it to grow closer to Christ. N.T. Wright once said that since Christ's death and resurrection, God does not work in spite of evil; He works in and through it. Jesus Christ took the worst Satan could throw at Him, entered into human pain, and came out victorious. We can do the same when we face adversity and continue to trust in the God who raises the dead! As Dr. Shenk proclaims, God uses evil and suffering to destroy evil and suffering.

This book is an excellent read and helps one develop a proper theodicy. I am a wife and mother, and I highly recommend this book to women who can use it to teach their children. Put your thinking cap on and dive in!!!

Great Book for Kids Who Want to Create Computer Programs!

We received a review copy of this book, and my son loves it. He has taken some classes with the author previously, and was very excited to receive a copy of Danny's new book. I will now give the keyboard over to him so he can state his opinions on the book: Hi, this is Michael. I had learned a lot about Scratch programming previously, and this book allowed me to learn so much more about the program than I could have or ever did in the classes I took. For kids who are newer to the program, this book begins with a very simple program that is very friendly to newcomers to learn off of. For kids with previous experience, only the first 3 chapters or so are things that we have learned in the classes. While these are still good to review, the author did a very good job of delving right into the stuff that would be new for people who have already taken some classes, without making the lessons have too steep a difficulty curve for newer students. That alone shows how this book is created for both types of kids working on learning Scratch. The book is full of diagrams of how the programming should look exactly, along with explanations of what each part of the code does that helps the program function correctly. These diagrams and illustrations are very clear as to exactly what it should look like. The book is split into sections, each of which have a few games/animations which focus on teaching the feature the chapter teaches. This makes the goal of what each program should look like very clear, and it should be obvious if a kid makes a mistake, so they can fix it right away and learn what that part of the programming does more in depth, as they can then see how it affects the program overall. All in all, this book is very good. It is helpful for both experienced users of Scratch and new ones, it has clear illustrations and instructions for what to do, and it helps these users gain an understanding of how all the parts work into a whole through focused sections of the book. If your kid is like me, and wants to be a computer programmer, they should read this book and pick up Scratch, because both of these have a nice learning curve and can act as an introductory level program for future programmers.

Highly recommend this book

My 9, now 10 year old, had the pleasure learning from this text and Danny himself. When we heard his book had been published we had to get it. This easy-to-use book is exciting material and allowed my son to learn quickly and retain that information because of the kid friendly style of learning. My son is now is part of an elite tech group at his school teaching teachers and student by using ideas, concepts, and this book as a strong foundation and key contributor to his success. I usually don't post reviews but this was such an impact on my son that I had to express my genuine appreciation and highly recommend this to anyone learning scratch or thinking of programing apps.
