About the Author

J. Amos Hatch is Professor of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee and the editor of Qualitative Research in Early Childhood Settings and coeditor (with Richard Wisniewski) of Life History and Narrative. He was coeditor (with Richard Wisniewski) of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education for five years.

Must read for new qualitative researchers focused on dissertation

As a new qualitative researcher, finding Dr. Hatch's book "cleared the clouds" and provided an easy to read support for all the processes necessary to be successful with a qualitative research project, especially for dissertation students. After reading all the classics (Yin, Creswell, Denzin, Lincoln, Stake, Miles and Hubermann, etc) Hatch brings it all together and provides solid questions for you to evaluate your own work before sending it into your committee. Must have for new qualitiative researchers!

Great Roadmap

The following comments were submitted by a student the first time I used Dr. Hatch's excellent text--Jim Horn

This book provided a rich description of qualitative research and an easy to understand roadmap for students embarking on the process of conducting a qualitative research study. Hatch took a difficult subject and made it accessible to novice researchers by providing an in-depth, well-thought out presentation of how to go about conducting research step by step in a logical manner. It was thorough from beginning to end. It also spoke to the individual, unique personal qualities and characteristics of the researcher that is inherent to the research. Therefore, it offered us an opportunity to do some real soul-searching and see ourselves in a different light.

It was easy to read and understand and organized well. I thought the section about writing and Hatch's personal experiences were very valuable not only for researchers but for those who wish to write or improve their writing skills in general. The data analysis chapter was extremely helpful during the data analysis process because it provided clear, easy-to-follow steps. I used it as a guide and a reference for my project.

One suggestion is that the section on research paradigms might be a little difficult for some students who are not familiar with the meaning of ontology and epistemology. In our class, a number of students noted they had a hard time understanding these concepts so it might be helpful if there was a paragraph that explains these concepts leading into the connection to the various paradigms.

Overall, this is an excellent introduction for students to the various steps in the process. It was enjoyable to read, enlightening and it gave me a solid foundation for conducting my own study. I loved the book and I enjoyed doing qualitative research. It was also helpful . . . to enable us to delve deeply into the challenging and exciting experience of conducing qualitative research. The book and Dr. Horn also provided a good contextual framework for different methodologies as well.

The importance of qualitative research in education settings can not be underestimated in world in which children are often reduced to nothing but a number on a standardized test score. Thank you, Dr. Hatch, for giving us this wonderful gift and thank you Dr. Horn for sharing it with us.

One of Many Great Books by Denis Waitley

When I was in High School in the 80s, the school's guidance counselor loaned me a copy of Seeds of Greatness thinking it was a book I'd enjoy and learn from. He was so right! This was the first of Denis Waitley's books that I read, and I enjoyed it so much, and believed in his lessons that I have been reading his books and listening to his audio and video programs ever since. I am very thankful that I read this book and learned of the wonderful lessons Denis Waitley shares.

The ten seeds Waitley shares include Self-Esteem, Creativity, Responsibility, Wisdom, Purpose, Communication, Faith, Adaptability, Perseverance, and Perspective. While the book was written in 1983, these seeds are just as important today. Maybe even more so the way some of the world seems to be turning.

The simple truths that Waitley shares, if listened to and followed, will help anyone achieve greater success. Waitley has shared these basic principles of success with millions over the years and they are full of ageless wisdom that will help you too. I strongly endorse all of Waitley's works and this one holds a special place because it was the first of his that I read, and the book that led me to learn and apply his wisdom which has helped me succeed.

As a writer and also a book collector, I was happy to find a hard cover edition of this book in excellent shape to add to my library. The same book that I was loaned so many years ago...

The definitive work on "Success"

I have read this book, bought copies of this book and given to others and have watched it change people's lives.

As he points out, there are no "secrets" to success-- merely seeds. But the power of this book is the realization we must all have that the seeds are already there, within us. The seeds to have our own dreams, set our own goals, and work towards those goals.

There are better and more detailed reviews available than mine. But I'll leave you with this: if you would like a book that's easy to read, easy to understand, and can help you to change the way you approach yourself and others, get this book-- or the paperback version. Or better yet, get it as a book on CD.

An introduction into the problems of Christian philosophy. It focuses on the philosophical system of Dr. Cornelius Van Til, which in turn is founded upon the presuppositions of an infallible revelation in the Bible and the necessity of Christian theology for all philosophy.

Basic to this study is the belief that presuppositions of human thought in every field must be basically one in order to arrive at any concept which both validates biblical faith and human knowledge. The sovereignty of the self-contained God is the key to every field, in that only the God of Scripture makes all things possible and explicable and is thus the basic premise not only of theology, but of philosophy, science and indeed all knowledge. In that God is the Creator of all things. He is their only valid principle of interpretation, in that they derive both their existence and meaning from His creative act. This belief is herein set forth in terms of various aspects of human thought.

Again basic to this study is the belief that such a philosophy finds consistent and able exposition in the writings of Cornelius Van Til. This work, therefore, is thus both an exposition as well of Van Til's development of that philosophy, a school of thought to which the author subscribes.

This is Rushdoony's foundational work on philosophy.

RUSHDOONY'S INFLUENTIAL EXPOSITION OF VAN TIL

Rousas John Rushdoony (1916-2001) was a Calvinist philosopher, historian, and theologian and is widely credited as the father of Christian Reconstructionism. This 1958 book is subtitled, "An analysis of the philosophy of Cornelius Van Til"; Van Til was a famous professor of "presuppositional" apologetics at Westminster Theological Seminary.

He asserts, "Man neither is nor can be 'objective' and 'impartial.' All his thinking is from some fundamental starting point or presupposition which is a priori and is therefore either pure or impure faith." (Pg. 13) Later, he adds, "The difficulty most people experience is not with Van Til's writing but with his God; it is essentially He whom they find unacceptable and offensive. Their quarrel is not with what they cannot understand in Van Til but with that which they all too clearly understand." (Pg. 98)

He argues, "The orthodox view of the authority of Scripture is often rejected as involving circular reasoning; it is charged that it is merely reasoning from God to God, and from the Bible to the Bible. There is no reason in denying this charge. Rather, it must be affirmed that in a very real sense all reasoning is circular reasoning. Men move from their basic presuppositions to brute factuality, 'facts,' whose meaning is predetermined by their philosophic presuppositions and the subjectivity of their resasoning, back again to their own interpretation." (Pg. 139-140) He reiterates, "Scripture speaks to man with authority... All this the Christian must boldly affirm, without any hesitancy with regard to the charge of circular reasoning." (Pg. 145-146)

This book had great influence on persons such as Greg Bahnsen and Gary North, and will be of ongoing interest to students of presuppositional apologetics, or Christian Reconstruction.

Rushdoony on Van Til

This is a must read for anyone who would seek to know God on God's terms. Men water down Christianity, with a tendency to deify themselves. Rushdoony's explanation of Cornelius Van Til restores the Biblical view of God and man. The writing demands something of the reader, but it is a difficult subject. Here it is made intelligible, if not overly simple.

Rushdoony was one of the most profound christian thinkers in the twentieth century. His introduction to Cornelius Van Til is well worth reading. I would also recommend reading "Always Ready" by Greg Bahnsen, as well as Van Til's "A survey of Christian Epistemology", his "An Introduction to Systematic Theology" and "A Defense of the Faith". In these writings the pretended autonomy of anti-theistic thought is exposed for what it is (thoroughly bankrupt).

About the Author
Rev Canon Joseph Chileakam Ofoegbu hails from Umuaguegbe Umuofor Egbu Autonomous Community in Owerri North L.G. A of Imo State. He is a graduate of Theological College of Northern Nigeria (T.C.N.N) Bukuru, Jos and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri (B.D, NCE) and holds a Master's Degree in New Testament Studies (M.A) from University of Jos, Plateau State. Nigeria. He is currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Theology (Ph.D) at South African Theological Seminary, Rivonia Johannesburg in South Africa. He is an ordained Clergyman in the Anglican Communion, and works with Diocese of Bauchi, Jos Province. He is the Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF), and Anglican Corpers Fellowship of Nigeria (ACFON) Chaplain, a renowned member of Scripture Union (S.U) Nigeria and Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion (EFAC). He is the former Project Coordinator of Diocesan Action Committee on HIV/AIDS (BDACA), Diocese of Bauchi. He preaches in Seminars and Conferences in different parts of Nigeria. He is married to Mrs. Grace Onyinye Ofoegbu and they are blessed with a son Divine Favour Mmesoma and a daughter Angel Chimamanda. This text demonstrates the difference between Westerners' passive admiration of representational images and the intense interaction with art characteristic of native African and American cultures. Westerners may have extended the use of the art-image beyond the purely representational, but in Ethiopia the power transmitted from art to believers is actually used to heal. "Art that Heals" examines a variety of colourful objects: church frescos from the 15th to the 20th century, processional crosses, drawings, codices, and icons - all used by the clergy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church not as passive objects but as active forces to heal the sick. In particular, the book provides an analysis of key examples of the beautiful parchment scrolls used from the 18th to the 20th century. In Ethiopia when a person is physically, mentally, or spiritually ill a scroll is usually commissioned either by himself or his immediate family. Using a complex iconography developed from various religious traditions (ancient Greek, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish), the priest paints vivid images and writes prayers on the scroll to call upon God and the spirits who have caused the illness. In addition to abstract talismanic patterns and the frequent use of brightly coloured eyes, the scrolls often depict the story of Solomon or feature pictures of lions and birds. It is the trance induced by staring at this scroll that reputedly heals patients "through their eyes". Investigating the iconography of these objects, this work explains the cultural and spiritual origins of each. These are images which challenge our whole perception of art.

disappointed with the kindle edition

Bought this kindle version of the washington manual of pathology previously and was disappointed because THE KINDLE EDITION DOESN'T COME WITH A CODE FOR ACCESS TO THE IMAGE BANK!
AND THE POOR FORMATTING OF THE BOOK WHEN READ IN iPhone (the table of content didn't even show up!)
Returned the book within one day and lost a few dollars as a result. The fact that no access to the image bank will be provided with the book should have been addressed clearly on the amazon page and the formatting issues with kindle text books (which also applies to other books I have bought) should also have been addressed by the editing team prior to publishing it.

This book was ok it was not as good as some of the others I've read. I have not read this series in order. I read the wolf who hatched an egg first. The the shark who rode the sea horse. Then the two books about the lynx brothers . Those books are better. But this ones ok!
