It has long been known that doing puzzles keeps your brain from surrendering to altzheimers. I find the PEOPLES PUZZLERS more attuned to my limited knowledge of the outside world. They are fun and informative.

[It] comes with appropriate examples when needed and has plenty of well-chosen exercises as may be expected from a textbook. As the author points out in the introduction, a newcomer may be advised, on a first reading, to skip part one and take the required properties of the ordered real field as axioms; later on, as the student matures, he/she may go back to a detailed reading of the skipped part. D. J. H. Garling is an Emeritus Reader in Mathematical Analysis at the University of Cambridge. He has 50 years' experience of teaching undergraduate students in most areas of pure mathematics, but particularly in analysis.

Great Introduction for Undergraduates

A really great introduction to real analysis which demands basically no prerequisites, something that fitted me very well. There is even a brief summary of set/number theory (in the Prologue) which is developed further in chapter two to deal with Abeilian groups,rings, fields, morphisms and some interesting -if not immedeately useful for this book- rudimentary number theory. For the better prepared student the author states clearly that the first section (chpts. 1,2 on set and number theory can be omitted but they're still nice to have in my opinion.) My only problem with that element of the book was that the first two chapters introduced a lot of new notation, sometimes without any clear explanation of what it meant. However, this is not vital to the understanding of the book and thus a pretty tiny drawback. The treatment of sequences and series and convergence and continuity to be particularly crisp and understandable. There is also a lot of "additional" material such as an introduction to Fourier series and a wide range of applications, for example the Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function.

All in all a very concise book (even with the prologue), just shy of 300 pages but still comprehensive in its description of the fundamentals of real analysis. (And, for the undergraduate level, this is much better suited than Rudin, which to me seems like a better fit for more mature mathematicians (i.e. graduates).)

Business people can sometimes be funny if they try

Classier comedy writers like Gene Perret and Robert Orben have tried to help business people and public speakers over the past 20 years or more. If you make money with it, it is usually called "professional speaking," and there are a lot more speakers around than there are comedians. Also, the comedy in the clubs took on an angry tone, with more sex and toilet jokes than necessary. So, "OH, THAT'S WHAT YOU WRITE" could easily be surmised if people call themselves comedy writers...Business speakers can use help in being funny, and the second part of the book gives lists of jokes that may go over or may not, depending on the strength of your delivery. So, be sure to read the "Tips on Delivery" chapter. "Pitfalls of Humor" chapter makes some good points also. A comedian has more freedom to say what he pleases since if we like him, he is accepted as a buffoon from beginning to end. But in the more usual world of business, you basically have to have a serious message, which is interspersed with funny quips or stories. If you want to sell and make money, don't offend, be light. So Gene Perret has put together a useful guide for businessmen and speakers.

If you like humor, and want to make jokes, yourself, buy this book. Perrot makes it clear that humor is appropriate to any situation, and indeed is the best, simplest solution to many situations. He illustrates a number of times with situations that you are sure aren't suitable for humor, then immediately demonstrates that they are. I've been meaning to memorize the airline stewardess opening. Unfortunately, the text is only 100 pages long, the other 90 pages are a list of jokes for various business settings.

Crawford's 1990 Poultry Breeding and Genetics, now out of print, for which Hutt himself wrote the preface at the age of 91), but Genetics of the Fowl is still the first book everyone should read on poultry genetics. New information has come to light since its publication, but it builds upon the solid foundation laid down by Hutt.

About the Author

Frederick Bruce Hutt's career in scientific writing began at age 8, when he sent a letter correcting a newspaper account about the first butterflies of spring, since he had observed the butterflies several days earlier than reported. A mentor launched him into poultry breeding by giving him a setting hen and clutch of eggs at age 11.

His precocity continued into old age. At 35, he became the youngest president of the Poultry Science Association. He researched, taught, and wrote extensively. He published more than 250 papers and articles, some intended for audiences of farmers and poultry hobbyists and others intended for researchers and geneticists. His clear, well-organized style won him a warm welcome with all audiences.

Hutt did ground-breaking research in breeding for disease resistance (including Marek's disease and salmonella pullorum), spearheaded the use of "progeny testing" as the most reliable breeding method, and created the first chromosome map of the chicken. He was a professor at Cornell University and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Heredity for 25 years.

His books include Genetics of the Fowl, Animal Genetics, and Genetic Resistance to Disease in Domestic Animals.

Good info on poultry genetics.

It was a bit heavy on the scientific lexicon despite the claim that it was "written for the common man", but loaded with invaluable information on poultry genetics. It you're trying to breed towards or away from certain phenotypes or genotypes, or just trying to figure out why you keep getting certain results, this book may prove helpful in guiding you in the right direction.

Great Review of Woodworking

There is a lot we do not know or have forgotten. This book pulls up knowledge that was common in 1900 but is mostly lost today. From using tools to building furniture and out buildings this book literally has it all. Of course, you will be reading about how to use hand tools and make joints that are beyond belief today, but it is a lot of fun even if you decide to build nothing like the items described in the book.

A lot of basic woodworking knowledge is here, and a lot of it is never before heard in the modern world advice. The book is profusely illustrated, but be aware that the illustrations are complex and not very large.

A good book. Worth the price.
