About the Author

Thomas Friedli

 

Thomas Friedli is Managing Director at the Chair of Production Management, and Vice Director, Institute of Technology Management, University of St.Gallen (Switzerland). Thomas Friedli’s main research focus is the management of manufacturing enterprises. His area of expertise is in operational excellence in the pharmaceutical industry, collaboration management, management of industrial services and management of global production.

In 2004, Thomas habilitated and became Adjunct Professor in St.Gallen. His team of 12 postgraduate students develops new management solutions for manufacturing companies. The Chair is largely financed through external funds, while most of the research projects are industrial projects. In 2007 he became an associate member to the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) and joined the SAQ (Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems) as an advisory council in 2009. Since 2010, he is member of the board of the Swiss Institute of Service Sciences (SISS).

Thomas is teaching in several executive programs in St.Gallen, Fribourg, Dornbirn, Salzburg and Aachen; moreover, he is visiting lecturer at the Business School of Bordeaux. In fall 2008, he spent several weeks as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. Since 2011, Thomas is Senior Lecturer of the Executive MBA program in St.Gallen and since 2012 also Senior Lecturer of the St.Gallen full time MBA program.

Prabir Basu

Prabir Basu is an independent consultant advising on pharmaceutical manufacturing and cGMP issues. From 2005 till June, 2013, Prabir was the Executive Director of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education (NIPTE) which is currently a non-profit organization supported by 13 leading universities in the U.S. NIPTE’s goal is to address long-term fundamental research and education on the science of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing. As the Executive Director of NIPTE, Prabir built a strong relationship with the U.S. FDA and secured funding from the FDA for research and education programs to modernize drug manufacturing. Working with the U.S. FDA, Prabir was also able to secure a U01 Grant for NIPTE in 2011 worth up to $35 million over 5 years to improve drug manufacturing standards.

From 2004 to 2010, along with his role as Executive Director, NITPE, Prabir was also the Managing Director of the Pharmaceutical Technology Education Center at Purdue University’s Discovery Park. In this role, Prabir, along with colleagues at Purdue and scientists from the industry, organized and offered various training courses on cGMP, Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing.

Prabir, along with his colleagues at Purdue University also founded NIPTE at Purdue in 2005. Prior to joining Purdue University, Prabir worked in the pharmaceutical industry (Pfizer, Pharmacia and Searle) for over 20 years in various capacities in research, development and manufacturing. During that period, Prabir had broad-ranging global senior management responsibilities for product development, manufacturing and outsourcing.

Daniel Bellm


Daniel Bellm is Research Associate at the chair of production management of the University of St.Gallen and as group coordinator responsible for the topic “Operational Excellence – Pharma”. His research focus is the management of operational excellence programs and complexity management. He is currently working on his PhD-thesis.

Daniel graduated in Business Engineering (Dipl.-Wi.-Ing.) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (former University of Karlsruhe (TH), Germany). During his studies, Daniel worked at the Porsche AG (Germany), MTU Friedrichshafen (Germany), Porsche Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Singapore), and Volkswagen Consulting (Germany).

Jürgen Werani


Jürgen Werani was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1951. He is a citizen of Switzerland. From 1971 until 1976, he studied pharmacy at the University of Graz, Austria. He received his doctorate in natural sciences in 1978. In 1998, he obtained a degree in Business Administration at the University of St.Gallen. In 2008, he received his Lean Expert qualification from the Lean Management Institute Germany. Between 1979 and 1995, Dr. Werani held a number of leading positions in pharmaceutical manufacturing at Sandoz Pharma AG in Basel, Switzerland. There he finally took on the role of Head of Solids Production. In 1995, he transferred to Warner Lambert Company where he became Managing Director of the Gödecke AG Freiburg plant. In 1998, he joined Gödecke AG’s Board of Management. From 2000 onwards, he was member of the Board of Management of Pfizer Germany GmbH. From 2003 to 2008, Dr. Werani was responsible for the implementation of the Operational Excellence Program in Europe which included its deployment to a total of 15 sites. Since 2008, he has been member of the Managing Board of Schuh & Co. Complexity Management AG in St.Gallen,
Switzerland.

Dr. Jürgen Werani has gained broad experience in the field of Operational Excellence and Lean Thinking in the pharmaceutical industry as well as in state-of-the-art methods of corporate management and leadership. He is the author and co-author of reference books on these subjects, wrote numerous publications and is a sought-after speaker at congresses and seminars on corporate change management. During his time at Pfizer Freiburg, Dr. Werani introduced the principles of Lean
Manufacturing on a broad scale, thus helping to turn the site into a leading Lean Manufacturing production site in the pharmaceutical industry. Since 2008 he has been leading several projects in different companies addressing Operational Excellence, Cultural Change and Leadership Development programs. He also acts as a mentor and coach for Executives and operational
leaders.

Life-saver!!!

this book has been a life-saver for school and understanding if bullet-point or normal terms what a nurse should be looking for using equipment, taking care of a patient with a certain condition and even just understanding pathophysiology without all the fluff and confusion. Do yourself a favor a buy the book!!! Made me feel like I could really achieve my course instead of feeling like a deer in headlights

Happy Nurse!

New nurse (to the ICU) - I came from Oncology. ICU is a whole different learning curve. I felt this gave a well explained overview of the ICU life. (Obviously you will see TONS of different diagnosis, s/s, and may need to go WAY in depth on some topics) This will get you the fundamentals as well as common things to look for. It is an AMAZING reference so far. Love the different diagrams, tables, pictures, lay outs.

The Stranger is back!

The Stranger 2 gives you a little more insight into who the characters are. You get to see Mikah working at his job as a waiter for a high end restaurant while also learning a little more details about the stranger. This one ends with a cliffhanger so be prepared!

It is interesting that this stranger keeps popping up into Mikah's life. I hope more is coming since I love this couple. I hope to find out who this stranger is and see how far things go.

What is it about a name that changes a total stranger into a close acquaintance?

A name is very important in establishing the commonality in our lives and others to build the tight network of mutual thoughts and feelings. It is devoid of permanence and emotional attachments in most cases, but may assist the basis of contact. The line of separation between people is often blurred or suppressed. Turmoil disrupts communications and shreds all emotions not currently involved at the moment. This series slowly reveals the lack of introduction as a means to entice and subdue physical contact while not recognizing the emotional turmoil linking the people.

I suppose it started when I learned the circumstances of the suicide of Vincent van Gogh; how he had finished a painting, then walked into a corn field and shot himself, and not in the manner one thinks of a suicide. He shot himself in the abdomen, then walked over a mile on a rough trail through the woods above the village of Auvers, France, to the home of his friend, Doctor Gachet, for help. It seemed clear to me that this was not the behavior of a suicidal man. (Particularly when you see how well he was painting at the time.) Vincent had been murdered, and for some reason, I guess from looking at his paintings, I thought that the color blue might be a clue to the circumstances of his murder.

So I decided to write a novel about the color blue.

When it first occurred to me, I had no idea what a can of paint of I was opening. I’ve written historical novels before, but I’d always picked periods and stories that had huge blank spots in them, spots that I could fill in with my story. But I was about to write about the period in which the French Impressionists rose to prominence, and unlike the life of Jesus or the court of King Lear, where very little was known about what actually happened, I could pretty much look up what each of the Impressionists had for breakfast every morning. It was a curse of riches. There was more material than I could ever cover in a single story, unless I found a way to constrain it.

So, to pursue my murder mystery, my tale of an art movement, my portrayal of the Bell Epoch in Paris, I had to find a point of view that would help me cover the time period, from 1863 to 1891 and beyond, so I invented, Lucien Lessard, the baker of Montmartre, Paris—the baker who wants to be a painter, whose father was a patron of Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne when they were at their poorest, and who attended art school with Vincent van Gogh and his best friend, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Lucien and Henri would be my detectives, and with them, we would discover not only Vincent’s killer, but the secret and magic behind the mysterious shade of “sacred blue” (Sacr� Bleu), and how it had inspired and haunted artists all through history.

Four years after the notion first occurred to me, I turned in the manuscript to Sacr� Bleu, and I think it is what I had hoped it could be: a mystery, a fantasy, a romance, a comedy, a history, and an appreciation. I didn’t have an art education going into this book, but I certainly do coming out, and I hope that the reader will painlessly and joyfully, share some of the enthusiasm I have for the subject.

Dark little fairy tale of the color blue

That's how Christopher Moore characterizes Sacr� Bleu. It's also a mystery, a comedy and a dizzying, dazzling trip through the art world of fin-de-siecle Paris.

I read somewhere that every single one of Christopher Moore's books has been optioned but not one has ever made it to film. I think it must be because producers eventually realize that it's just too much of a challenge to translate the sheer lunacy and demented sweetness of Moore's books to the screen.

The book begins on the day of Vincent Van Gogh's death in Auvers, a village near Paris. Vincent has gone to a crossroads to paint. The history is that Van Gogh there shot himself, then walked a mile to the home of his doctor to seek treatment. Moore wondered if it made any sense that an artist at the height of his powers, even one as tormented as Van Gogh, would shoot himself at that point. And then, why would he walk a mile to his doctor's place rather than just lie down and die? Moore appoints baker-turned-painter Lucien Lessard, and famed painter and libertine Henri Toulouse-Lautrec as his alter-ego detectives to pursue the answer to this puzzle. The pursuit involves Renoir, Manet, Monet, Whistler, Pissarro, Gaugin, Seurat, a menacing character called the Colorman, the artists' muses, a few side trips through time and space, and lots and lots about the color blue.

It's been a long time since I read a book in one afternoon, but once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Now, here I sit with my eyes burning and my head filled with whirling images of the adventures of the naive young Lucien and his usually drunk and lubricious but always endearing friend, Toulouse-Lautrec. In the Afterword, Moore writes, "I know what you're thinking: 'Well thanks loads, Chris, now you've ruined art for everyone.'" Far from it. He's definitely made it a whole lot weirder, but isn't that what you're looking for from one of his books?

Moore always travels to the settings of his books before he writes and, in this case, that means France, mainly Paris. If you visit his blog. he has included a chapter guide where, as he says, "you'll find some photographs, a little background on the geography, history, and art featured in the book, as well as observations and musing I had while researching and writing the book that just wouldn't fit in the story, but I hope will give some perspective on it." Before, during or after you read the book, I highly recommend a visit to the blog and the chapter guide. Among many other items of interest---and more extensive attempts to ruin art for everyone---there are photographs of Auvers, the village where Van Gogh was living at the end of his life, including the real-life settings of several Van Gogh paintings, juxtaposed with the paintings themselves.

In addition to being a flat-out joyride of a novel, this is a beautifully produced book, with typefaces evocative of its 19th century Parisian setting and reproductions of artworks of Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and many other luminaries of the period. Recommended.

Irreverent Art History

Set primarily in Montmartre, Paris in the 1890s, this is a book about artists, muses and the color blue. Of course, being written by Christopher Moore, you can expect everything to be skewed to the absurd, a bit bawdy, irreverent and playful. Moore inhabits his book with figures real (Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarro, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet and Renoir) and unreal (Bleu--a body-jumping muse, the Colorman--a gnome who can create the otherwordly shade of blue known as Scare Bleu, and Lucien Lessard, a baker/painter who is obsessed with Juliette).

While reading, I was always curious about what was real and what wasn't. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book for me was Moore's Afterword ("So, Now You've Ruined Art), which provided a breakdown of what was based on fact and what wasn't. Surprisingly, quite a bit of "realness" snuck into a book that is quite fanciful and absurd. It was interesting to learn that Monet really did paint his wife Camille on her deathbed, the puzzling circumstances of Vincent Van Gogh's death, and the ungodly amount of artists who died of syphilis. Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed were the images of the real paintings that are discussed and play a role in the book. I thought it was an ingenious way to make art history come alive in a way that would even seem palatable to ... say ... teenage boys.

However, I just didn't fall in love with the book (despite my deep and abiding adoration of several of Moore's other books). Part of it was the goofy sophomoric humor that runs throughout the book (I guess boobie and penis jokes just don't do it for me) and the other part was the fractured nature of the tale that just didn't draw me in. The real problem, perhaps, is that I just didn't care about any of the characters too much so I never got all that invested in the book or what was happening. Still, if you're a fan of Moore, it is worth checking out even if it fell a bit flat and wasn't his best work. (If Amazon would allow me to give half stars, I would rate it a solid 3.5 out of 5.)

"Art isn't easy"

The quote above isn't from Christopher Moore's Sacr� Bleu, but is rather from Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George," a musical about the painter Georges Seurat. These lyrics were like a soundtrack in my head as I read Moore's latest:

Piece by piece-
Only way to make a work of art.
Every moment makes a contribution,
Every little detail plays a part.
Having just a vision's no solution,
Everything depends on execution;
Putting it together-
That's what counts!

Sondheim could as easily have been speaking about writing--and let's face it, he was. Christopher Moore's latest is indeed a work of art, in more ways than one. The first thing the reader will notice is the extraordinary look and design of this gorgeous novel. It's something so rarely seen these days, but in the not too distant past, bookbinding was its own art form. Kudos to HarperCollins for making this book so special! It's covered in a metallic blue half dust jacket that allows the exotic, erotic painting printed right on the book's cover to peek through. The endpapers feature a vintage map of Paris. The book has a lovely layout, and the text is--yes--printed in a rich indigo blue. And within, there are full color reproductions of dozens of paintings by the Impressionist masters who are the characters of this novel. It's odd to spend this much time discussing the outside of a book, but that's how fabulous this one is. And I have heard that only the first edition hardback will be printed in full color, so I would suggest grabbing a copy fast.

As for the story, that's a little more difficult to summarize this time around. For past Moore novels, I could say: It was about vampires, a demon, a jinn, a sea monster that feeds on emotion, a man who walks on water. Like those previous books, this one features an element of the fantastic, but I absolutely cannot explain that element in a word, a phrase, or quite possibly a paragraph. It's different, it took me quite a while to figure out what was going on, and I'm not going to spoil that ride for you.

What I can talk about is the world against which Moore's over-the-top tale is set, and that is the world of the great French Impressionist painters. It opens with the death of Vincent Van Gogh in Auvers, France in 1890. Long assumed to have been suicide, Moore posits a murder. From that opening, the story moves to Paris, and takes up with Vincent's shocked peers. The news is told to baker Lucien Lessard, the struggling artist at the heart of this tale, and one of the very few fictional characters in the book. Lucien rushes out to give the sad news to his pal Henri. You may be familiar with him as Count Henri-Marie-Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, or just Toulouse-Lautrec, as he is generally known today.

Henri is the ideal sidekick for a Moore novel. As outrageously as Moore's characters tend to behave, one gets the impression that Henri is depicted quite true to character. And he is wildly entertaining! The truth is, I didn't need the somewhat odd plot about the color blue and the menacing "Colorman." I could have spent this entire novel eavesdropping on Lucien, Henri, Monet, Manet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Renoir--yes, Seurat--and so many more, as they went about creating and discussing art. It was riveting. As with Moore's Shakespeare novel, Fool, this tale clearly springs from the author's love and appreciation of their work. And he's done his homework; reading Sacr� Bleu is like the most awesome art history lesson ever.

If that's not enough for you, Moore has included a terrific Afterward entitled "So, Now You've Ruined Art" which answers "...what, among this big, blue lie, is true? What really happened?" And it wasn't enough for me, actually. I was so entranced by Moore's artists that I immediately dove into a non-fiction work after reading Sacr� Bleu. It was all I could do to restrain myself from hopping on the first flight to Paris. That's how this book affected me.

I realize I haven't actually said much about what happens in the novel. My advice is just read and go where the story takes you. It's funny and profane and over-the-top. It's Christopher Moore. Art ISN'T easy, and I don't know another writer who can do what Moore does. As Mr. Sondheim said, everything depends on execution. Sacr� Bleu is an homage to art from a true artist in his own right.

This book does what Apple intends it to do, I guess. It explains everything server does from a strictly Apple training point of view. But I was disappointed that it's not loaded with advanced tips and tricks. For that, you will still have to use the Internet.

The format is similar to Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery ( LJ 10/1/89): blocks of time are isolated and their events chronicled, first with theories in prehistory and then through historical records. One finishes the book feeling that history has been more the march of armies than of enlightenment. Asimov's style is crisp, concise, and devoid of jargon, and he is not above interjecting an occasional ironic or strongly felt opinion when a human foible invites one. Some, perhaps most, concepts and events are treated in an overly simplified manner, but that is unavoidable in a book that attempts to cover 15 billion years of history. Events are conveyed in broad terms, and proportionately few dates are included to interrupt the narrative, making this book as useful in a circulating collection as in reference. Its use as a ready reference tool, either to answer basic questions or as a starting point for more detailed research, will depend largely on the thoroughness of the index, unavailable for review. Those wishing for a more concise historical chronology might purchase Bernard Grun's Timetables of History (S. & S., 1982. rev. ed.); though an older title, it covers a more manageable period, from 5000 B.C. to 1978. For public, school, and university libraries.

Let it simply be noted that Isaac Asimov was the most famous, most honored, most widely read, and most beloved science fiction author of all time. In his five decades as an author, he wrote more than four hundred books, won every award his readers and colleagues could contrive to give him, and provided pleasure and insight to millions. He died in 1992, still at work.

A Must-Have

If you have any interest at all in the world you live in, you should have this book. Basically chronicling the complete history of the world from its creation until 1945, it is an amazing, concise, helpful, fun quick referance.
If you are reading a historical novel and want to check how accurate it is, this book'll help you. Want to know what else was going on in the world during this war or that revolution? Just open 'er up!
I have this book handy at almost all times when I am reading. It is compartmentalized into sections concerning individual countries or groups, not just a big mishmash of everything going on all at once, and it reads very easily, not like a school history textbook. It includes a nifty "outline" timeline at the beginning, too, so you can just skim it over without reading every word.
An amazingly hefty, helpful, well researched book that no one should be without.

Asimov's Chronology of the World is a superb reference work. Although not really (and not meant to be) a coherent narrative, it is highly readable and absolutely essential to any historical research. It is useful as a reference tool in almost any historical context; if you're not sure when something happened, or exactly what happened, consult the Chronology. If it was a major happening, it's almost certain to be there, and realtively easy to find.
Asimov does sacrifice depth for breadth in this work; many more minor events are not covered. Also, if you plan to read this work cover to cover (I did, and it was very well worth the effort--doing so gives a broad perspective on history very difficult to find elsewhere), you need a good historical atlas on hand to understand how events unfold.
The only complaint I have with this work is that Asimov did not live long enough to write the sequel, chronologizing the events from 1945-2000. If anyone has found a good book to fill this gap, please let me know!
In sum, Asimov's Chronology is the essential one-volume reference to world history. No home library should be without it.

One of Asimov's best non-fiction works

This is probably Isaac Asimov's best non-fiction history book. It tells the story of history from a simple prespective of what happened when. Lots of modern historians have gotten away from that simple approach. It helps that Asimov is not a historian in the traditional academic way. He was just a person who knew a lot about many things, one of them being history.
Coupled with his work about Science and Discovery, it makes for a good reference work that is also a good read.
