Review
“The three authors are well-known contributors to the contemporary field, and they bring a broad vision to the design of this book. Each chapter is organized in a useful way from a student's perspective. This is an ambitious book, one that makes an excellent contribution to the field. A good student would find this book to add value.” (Economic Geography, October 2008)
"An exciting, comprehensive and accessible introductory text to economic geography which will excite, engage and capture the imagination of students." (Journal of Economic Geography)
“At last, an accessible, engaging, well-written, student-friendly economic geography textbook. The real beauty … is the quality and clarity of the writing.” (Times Higher Education)
"Covering the variety and complexity of the multiple themes and sub-themes that constitute the undergraduate field of economic geography to a functional level, requires a very meticulous, succinct and well-versed narrative - something which this book achieves with a great deal of verve... Any lecturers looking to revamp their core book choice for any economic geography module, to a book that can engage students and force them to think critically and spatially about the economic world around them, would be hard pushed to find a better contribution than this." (Economic Geography Research Group)
“A very strong overview of the contemporary economic debates … keeps the interest levels high.” (Oli Mould)
Review
"Economic Geography: A Contemporary Introduction brings teaching and learning in economic geography into the twenty-first century. Nothing like it has been written before. The text uses the whole world for its illustrations, and its open-minded theoretical sensibility resonates perfectly with the discipline. Economic geography has a text appropriate for the world in which we now live."
–Trevor Barnes, University of British Columbia
"At long last, a new, innovative, thought-provoking, introductory economic geography text – one that combines current theoretical insights with an impressive array of issue-based empirical examples drawn from across the world. Challenging and stimulating – Coe, Kelly, and Yeung have set a new standard."
–Peter Dicken, University of Manchester

Wouldn't recommend it for a classroom
By Tristan Daily
Haven't finished the book yet, but I'm easily far enough into it that I'm fairly certain it won't change a whole lot. I'm really not pleased with this one.
Plain and simple: the book is practically a wall of text and it fails to get the facts and concepts across in a decent manner. This is due to a few reasons; there are hardly any highlighted terms at all (which for me highlighted terms really help with knowing what's important in a given chapter as I go through it), and the book often uses long, drawn out explanations by way of metaphor and analogy. These have tripped me up far more than a straight up explanation ever would have, and it only serves to make the book much, much longer. The lack of highlighted terms and the overuse of long analogies over simple facts make the book almost impossible to skim through, or even to read quickly, either of which are great things for a college student to be able to do with any book. It also makes it very hard to take notes, which normally for me is worth the time and effort (not so much, here).
Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. Especially not as an academic text. The book gets concepts across, but it does so in a manner that takes far more time and effort than it should possibly need to. It simply doesn't read like a proper textbook should.

So I recommend purchasing the 1st edition as well
By Geoanalyst
This is not a critique about Amazon necessarily but about the contents of the book. From the 1st edition to the 2nd edition, overwhelming changes were made to render it a simply different textbook. So I recommend purchasing the 1st edition as well, a sit has many introductory concepts in a different light. This 2nd edition is more 'politically correct'; the 1st edition has more introductory and basic insights about economic geography and what distinguishes it than, for example, pure economics. The 2nd edition took a decidedly softer tone. I think it's important to criticize where need be and extol features of one discipline that are better assets than other fields; trying to be politically correct takes away from the uniqueness and distinction of a particular field. The need to placate and and be agreeable to the point of diffusing a particular discipline is simply a disservice.

This is a really hard to read textbook. If you're not an economic major or finance, then you will have a hard time comprehending the concepts.
