If you're looking for an AS book with the facts then this is the one.

You will find the explanations clear.

Hopefully if you are an AS sufferer this will give you some relief. It explains that it might not be as bad for you as you first thought. It details exercises that will make real difference for most sufferers.

Ankylosing Spondylitis explained

Excellent book that further explains this hereditary immune disease and the genetic HLA-B27-xx chromosone that your ancestors have handed down unknowingly. Just recently researchers have also found two other chromosones that are also linked to AS. You will find that even some Rheumatologist's will misdiagnose your disease because they either don't know enough about AS themselves or they feel the "tests" are too expensive. Therefore you may suffer in unnecessary debilitating pain until you insist upon testing. Educate yourself with the most knowledgeable doctor in this field who just so happens to have AS himself.

Good quick read but discounts alternative treatments

This is a good book to add to your research while waiting the four months it takes to get to see a rheumatologist. And at just 140 pages you might just read it in the waiting room.

It is very straight forward, albeit dry reading. It covers exercises, sleeping postures, case histories, alternative treatments, and medications from NSAIDs to TNF blockers like Embrel.

This is written by a medical doctor so naturally all alternative treatments are dismissed as having no value whatsoever.

Regarding chiropractic care, the author states that AS patients should "avoid manipulation" because these treatments have "sometimes inadvertently led to spinal fractures".

The low starch diet is discussed and is "not recommended" because it has not been "scientifically evaluated". Of course it hasn't been evaluated, and it never will be because there's no money to be made by large corporations.

Later he admits that "AS may be triggered by gut infection with Klebsiella bacteria". Given this statement I thought the low starch diet (which restricts Klebsiella) should have been given more consideration.

Despite the dishing of all alternative treatments, this book is a good resource.

A Museum of Natural History expedition is seeking the legendary Kothoga tribe in quest of the vile secret it conceals. The thoroughly terrified tribes nearby infer that the Kothoga and their malicious ways are too awful to discuss with outsiders, except to issue dire warnings. The expedition dissolves, with most of its members opting out of the territory with alacrity, only to perish in a plane crash. Two zealous individuals who heedlessly press on into the jungle vanish, but not before making the horrifying discovery they sought. The crates of the lost expedition, however, arrive back in New York City intact, and are consigned to the basement for cataloging. The story picks up back at the museum where murders have begun to occur with dreadful frequency. Forensics reveal the death blows were delivered with unusual strength, the corpses were dismembered with savage violence, and the perpetrator has mighty unusual DNA patterns. The NYPD, the FBI, and enterprising museum research assistants join efforts to solve the grisly murders but are stonewalled by officials in the head office who plan a revenue-generating exhibition of Amazonian artifacts, recklessly ignoring the impending danger to staff and visitors alike. A Fast Paced and Very Detailed Thriller

The novel starts off in the Amazon jungle as we accompany a very ill-fated scientific expedition. The expedition seems shelved for a bit, but is actually the basis for the novel. The reader quickly moves to New York's Museum of Natural History as the mysterious crates of this tragic scientific expedition become the focal point of brutal, bizarre homicide investigations. Bodies are found torn apart in the dark recesses and tunnels of the Museum.

We meet FBI agent Pendergast who joins forces with the NYPD's Vince D'Agosta to try and solve the murders before the Museum's big exhibition opening date. Pendergast is not stuffy and D'Agosta offers a bit of tongue in cheek sarcastic comic relief.
Dating back to the Amazon expedition we find the mass killer is basically an intelligent creature; not completely human.

The book is fast-paced and extremely detailed. The amount of detailed research which has gone into the world of scientific studies alone is impressive. The chase for the bizarre killer leads a few groups through the very lower depth labyrinths of the NYMoNH.

The characters are very well developed. The story has its share of twists. The largest twist comes in the Epilogue. Agent Pendergast's debut is certainly a good one.

Fantastic story to sink your teeth into.

I read this book sometime in the late 90s when it first came out. I know I enjoyed the story and all the scientific talk, plus the characters were well-fleshed out and likable. However, I read it on the train while I commuted to work and the full flavor of the story didn't sink in. Since then I have read all the books these two fine authors have produced.

Fast forward 17 to 18 years and I have read this book again, this time using the convenience of the Amazon Kindle reader. This time it took me only a couple of days to read it and I love the rich atmosphere and the fast-paced story with all its suspense.

I guess now I will have to re-purchase all the other books from these authors in the series and re-read them. Yum!

Intriguing, intricate, and intelligent

Agent Pendergast is the perfect Southern Gentleman! But he is also an FBI agent with a score to settle! This character, along with Lieutenant D'Agusta and the others that make this tale come to life, establish a reality that is hard to find in works of this type. One walks right there beside them every step of the way as they explore the mystery of the Museum Beast. One of the best reads of my life!

Light and entertaining for those who can read German

It's a fun book for people under 50 or so. An older colleague of mine (also a German professor) found he couldn't relate to the backgrounds or the life experiences of the two main characters, who are teenage boys. Also, I might add that I have an fairly advanced German language student to whom I've "assigned" this book this semester, and he is currently loving it. For those intimidated by the lofty German language of traditional German literature, this book should be an easier read, although you should be prepared for a lot of "youth speak" which will be alien to older readers.

Leaves A Lot Unsaid ....

I looked at the sample which claimed this book did not require any knowledge of C# or VB. I was looking for a resource to show me how to connect, and use, SQL databases with C# and Visual Studio 2010. I have plenty of experience in xBase languages, but need to make this transition. Since the book was just published, I figured this was a good choice.

Sadly, it seems like the author sat at the computer and dictated a text of what he was doing, and then said "copy this". Well, that includes his own directories, called resources that are likely not on your computer, and then a lot of code without any explanation of its purpose, or definition of its use. Example: He says "If you don't have the Northwind database you can download it from the Microsoft web site." Actually, its not that easy ! Also, he doesn't state that you want an Access install of this database. He then goes on to list a lot of code to type in, with no explanation of what you are actually doing.

This may be quite good for someone who is totally articulate in .NET and all of the Windows programming options, but for someone who is not, its just a smoke filled room that is hard to navigate and understand.

I'll come back to it after I work through other materials and hopefully it will make better sense then. For now, its just going to sit on my virtual bookshelf.

Perfect Timing

I was having trouble getting database access working in C# and this book was exactly what I needed. I downloaded it to my iPad and today has turned out to be a very productive day. The examples are clear and easy to follow so I was able to overcome my hurdles and make up some lost time on my project. I didn't have to skim through lots of blah, blah, blah on the history of VBA or any other dribble. It was too the point and exactly what I need to get the job done. Thank you Michael Schmalz and O'Reilly.

I would look elsewhere for instruction

I learned a few things from this book but even when following the script samples, I experienced issues compiling. Beyond the code samples, there seemed to be very little substance to this book.

Hysterical! A fun read!

This book is really fun! A great book to gift to a friend. It's well written, clever and surprisingly chock full of fact.

It's also a good one to read on the bus, when you want the seat next to you to stay open and untaken. Especially if you read it at night, looking shifty and sweaty, with some claw marks put in the cover.

If You've Just Been Bitten, You Need to Get a Copy of This Before Your First Moons

Many people who suddenly are infected by the medical condition known as lycanthropy according to this book die before during their first transformation into a werewolf. The Werewolf's Guide to Life is just what the title suggests, a handy guide that tells you, the recently bitten one, what is about to happen to your body, how when you do transform into a werewolf you won't be able to control yourself from ripping apart any human in your vicinity, and the guide will stress over and over again how important it is that you restrain yourself properly when the next "moon set" occurs. Also importantly that you restrain yourself in a way that will enable you to get yourself out when your full human intelligence returns after you returned to your normal human form. Handily at the back of the book is a nice appendix that tells you every date those three moons will occur until December 2011. Not sure if the publishers will release an updated version for the years after but if not that appendix info will be a bit dated if your reading this review after 2011.

This book dispels the myths and wrongful assumptions that are out there about werewolves. If you've just been bitten you need to read this book. I had never even thought about how still wearing a wedding ring would mean the loss of a finger as the hand expanded cutting off circulation to the finger. Likewise don't make the restraints you are using to secure yourself so as not to wipe out innocent humans to tight for similar reasons. There's tons of information in this manual that you just probably have won't have thought of before it's too late.

There's also information on how to deal with fur chasers (those who want to be bitten by you), werewolf hunters (those who wish to kill you simply because you are a werewolf), where to buy your restraint system materials, where to build it, places you can secure yourself in an emergency, what to do if you got loose during your transformation and killed, the four types of werewolf bodies out there and basically how to live as normal a life as possible with the lycanthropy condition.

This is no boring book of rules or a you won't want to finish how to manual. It is quite entertaining and even if you haven't been bitten yourself quite informative on just learning about lycanthropy and the burdens your friends who may well be transforming into werewolves during every full moon have to deal with. Like learning first aid, this book is worth reading before you're bitten so on the off chance you are, you'll know what to do. Hopefully I'll never need this advice but it's good to know if I am I will know what to do.

Furthering your situation

Similar in fashion to The Zen of Zombie and The Vampire Survival Guide, this handbook for the newly bitten werewolf shows you how to handle your transformations, new life, and cravings without hurting anyone. While the book on the whole was mildly entertaining and easy to read, all it really presents is a repetitive reminder on chaining yourself up in a saferoom for three nights a month (your moons). It covers concepts like your different stages you will encounter, longevity, how to feed, who to tell your secret, where to live, and avoiding doctors but always comes back around to securing yourself for those nights. You quickly grow tired of it. There's even mini-sidebars on real people that were purportedly werewolves, at least in the authors' presentation. I will say my teenage son read it after me and he laughed constantly. He's not a bookreader but he finished this in two days so it really interested him. The books not bad but it is far from great. Don't get me wrong, if you like these types of humor, tongue-in-cheek guidebooks, it is certainly worth adding to your collection.

While covering all the recent informatiion on pathogens, including molecular details, the text is easy to read and benefits greatly from a large number of well laid out tables."

If you need it, there is no substitute

The good news is that this is the most comprehensive collection of information about infectious diseases is dogs and cats. The bad news is that any book that is state of the art when it is sent to the publisher to be edited becomes less state of the art by the day.
If you're buying it for the curiosity, you must be REALLY curious.
If you're buying it to pass a class, consider renting it.
If you want to make sure that you know everything about an infection of dogs or cats, you have to have it, and you'll have to buy the new one in a couple more years...

Excellent overview, but organization can create frustration

This text provides a comprehensive, detailed overview of the plethora of infectious diseases of dogs and cats. However, the organization of the chapters by taxonomy of the organisms limits its utility for day to day clinical use. A more user friendly approach would have the book organized by body system or predominant clinical syndrome encountered. Despite this shortcoming, this book remains a true classic in veterinary medicine.
