Good old classic

Reading this was at first a little slow but once you understood the style it was good reading. The writer gave you want great picture of life in cossack village and their freedoms.

pluses and minuses

Tolstoy's story is wonderful; descriptions exacting and intense; connections to emotion amazing. I worked almost three years in the Republic of Georgia, and the experiences of Dmetri Olenin remind me, in many ways, of my own in the Caucuses. Just as Tolstoy and Olenin, I was struck by the natural beauty and granduer of the mountains and countryside; the beauty, complexity and zest for life of the people. The Caucasus, however, is also a land of contradictions: beauty and ugliness, simplicity and complexity. Tolstoy experienced it and was able to put his experiences to paper beautifully. The excellent illustrations add to one's enjoyment of the text. I give the story and the illustrations FIVE STARS.
The translation, on the other hand, seems lacking and poor in many instances. I have little doubt that a better more precise translation would create a greater, more accurate understanding of Tolstoy's story and meaning. It appears that the translators sat down with a Russian-English dictionary and used the first word they encountered to use, without consideration of the flavor, mood, or setting of the text and culture Tolstoy is writing about. That is why I give this particular edition three stars.

Fairly good short work by Tolstoy

I'm a great fan of "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". This Tolstoy story is much shorter, and while good, is a little less interesting. The book mostly focuses on the simple story and gives less insight into the Cossack and Chechen cultures that I had hoped. The story seems to reflect the reports that Tolstoy had a desire to personally live among the "common" people.

Very good *mathematical* logic book

This is *the* excellent mathematical logic book for anyone sufficiently familiar with the aims and spirit of mathematical logic. However, it is probably *not* suitable for a first introduction.
Some of the informal discussion expects the reader to supply the sense, and hence could be misleading for a novice (or even incorrect if taken literally!) On the other hand, the discussion is crystal clear and illuminating for someone with a bit more of background.
This book will not provide philosophical enlightenment to students of logic (esp. to those who seek such enlightenment in the first place), but it will provide good understanding of the study of general mathematical structures and their relation to logic. The prospective reader should first get acquainted with the model theoretic point of view (i.e. with its aims and presuppositions) before tackling this book. Good sources are: the first few chapters of Wilfrid Hodges's "A Shorter Model Theory" and the relevant articles by Jaakko Hintikka which were published in the journal "Synthese" in the late 1980's.

The steepest on-ramp to the fast lane of logic

Learning mathematical logic from this textbook is a little like learning to rock-climb by going straight to the half-dome. Most likely, you'll fall to your death. But if you're strong enough and lucky enough to endure the climb, you'll look back on how far you've come and have an "OH MY GOD I ACTUALLY DID THAT???" moment of clarity like nothing else you've ever experienced :-)

Excellent Choice for Teaching Mathematical Logic

This is a truly excellent book -- one I've used (along with other other books) to teach mathematical logic for 20 years. (The new edition provided welcome coverage of logic programming.) Traditionally, logic pedagogy has tended to revolve around which colleges or universities are involved. You will need to have sharp students to take full advantage of this textbook. In addition, some proof construction environment/proof checker is a good thing to have accompany the textbook; the same would hold of model finders. For grad students in my lab, I require familiarity with the book, sooner or later.

I have reviewed hundreds of technical books over the years for our magazine. Each gets a letter "grade" of either A, B, C, D, or F. Very few ever get an "A"but Gary Conner's book does and it is well deserved. It is entertaining, believable and loaded with graphics -- an easy, enjoyable and educational read.

Now, small manufacturers can reap the profits of Lean

For decades, large manufacturing operations have benefited from Lean Manufacturing principles. Many small, job-shop-type manufacturers try and fail to implement the Lean approach because Lean Manufacturing principles were developed for the large manufacturing environment.
Gary Conner has successfully adapted Lean principles to fit the job shop environment and presents them in an enjoyable story that allows the reader to witness the power of Lean. He makes Lean Manufacturing principles understandable, clearly demonstrating how job shops can implement them successfully. Another DISTRACTION in the Pursuit of Understanding LEAN

I am astonished that this publication would be recognized by the Shingo Prize Committee. I was originally optimistic about the contents based on the title. FOOLED AGAIN! The book is simply a collection of QUALITY based analysis and improvement tools, a few "war stories" and a very general discussion of LEAN tools and systems. I have been a Lean Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. "Lean for the Small Shop" is another of the flurry of textbooks recently published that offer very little in the way of useful information about how to successfully design and build a lean production system. Small shops really do need a simple and useful guide for understanding and implementing a lean system. "Lean for the Small Shop" is NOT that guide. If you are the "Lean Champion" in your company, read "Lean Production Simplified" by Pascal Dennis (the BEST introductory text that exists today). Do look at some of the series by Shigeo Shingo or Taiichi Ohno for your first "baby steps". Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei".

Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei". AVOID using a consultant just because he is near your location. There are still only a handful (literally) of Lean practitioners who really kow what they are doing here in America. Also don't be fooled by those universities who have put their otherwise good name on a group of people (Lean charlatans) who really can offer you nothing of value except a great looking "certificate".
