Nominated for an NAACP Image Award! Named one of The LA Times Best Books of 2015! "In these extraordinary tales, American Book Award-winner Due (My Soul to Take) uses a clear-eyed view of history to explain (but never excuse) the present." - Publishers Weekly (Starred) Stephen King says, "Ms. Due accomplishes the hardest thing of all with deceptive ease, creating characters we care about on their most human level." This is a truly good collection of shorts stories (and one novella). I can say the only fault I see is that every story could be a book. I will not write a review on each story for two reasons. First, the review would be way to long and second I feel that the stories should be read with no knowledge what they are about. I feel that they should be experienced without the reader knowing what they are about.

But I will say something about how I have rated the stories. The ones I gave 3.5 stars to are really good, great writing and everything. But I can't give them 4 stars because either they feel too short or the subject doesn't touch me as some of the other stories did. The 4 star stories are really good. I was tempted to give some of them 4.5 stars, but I do feel that they were a bit too short, they would have been incredible good if they just had been a bit longer because they are so good written and I love the characters.

That is why Ghost Summer gets the 5 star; here we have the books only novella. And, it's incredible good; yes it could have been an incredible book as well. But a novella is still a good length when it comes to a story. The story is given enough length to really get to know the characters and to tell a story.
I loved this collection. I would without doubt buy this collection because every single one of the stories is good.

I received this copy from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review! Thank you!

Beautiful Collection of Stories
By Kate Jonez
This is a beautiful collection of stories. That might seem like an odd description for horror stories but it is exactly right. The world in each one is lush and vivid. The horror rises up from within as though it has been there all along waiting for the storyteller to come along and reveal it. I'll be reading all the Tananarive Due books now!

A fascinating set of stories from a really good writer.

I had a great time reading some of those stories. I wish some of them were longer, maybe even a full novel size. The first story – “The lake” makes a good introduction. As the author wrote in a summary – it’s a tale told from the monster's perspective. Yes, I probably spoiled it for you right now :/. Sorry for that. I really enjoyed this story of transformation. I felt for the heroine, I just couldn’t dislike her.

The title story – “Ghost Summer” is really good. It is a typical ghost story set in Gracetown. This is a very interesting place, full of ghosts and people who see them. A young boy discovers some secrets while visiting his family. Some people would prefer those secrets staying hidden, though.

Then there was “The Knowing”. It’s about a girl with a special power. Or rather a curse, or at least she thinks it’s a curse. And after reading this I can’t blame her. I wouldn’t want a gift like that if I could do nothing to use it. Story begins with this quote and I think it’s rather perfect:

“Our teacher said one day that knowledge is power, and I had to raise my hand even though I don’t like to; I like to sit and be quiet and watch people and wait for lunchtime. But I had to ask him if he was sure about that, or if maybe knowledge isn’t just a curse.”

The stories from the third part of the book are of a post-apocalyptic kind. As much as I might not be a big fan of zombie stories I really enjoyed reading “Danger Word”. It’s about a boy and his grandfather have a very active and dangerous vacations. And it seems this story actually was made into a book. I should have a look at that one :).

To sum it up – this story set is really worth reading if you like this type of stories. Author has a gift with words and quite an imagination.
