About the Author
Stefan Zweig was born in Vienna in 1881. During his literary career he produced poetry, dramas, and narrative prose, but achieved his greatest acclaim as the writer of lively biographies of cultural and creative personalities in European history and literature, as well as essays and significant reminiscences about life and culture in the Austrian monarchy. He committed suicide in Brazil in 1942.

A brilliant work. One of the moments he talks about ...

Absolutely fascinating!!!! A brilliant work. One of the moments he talks about is a man called John August Sutter, who bought land in San Francisco and the area adjoining, and farmed it prior to the Gold Rush. When the Gold Rush arrived men had no qualms about shooting the farmers, and terrified, they all fled the land!!!!
After twenty years, he sued for restoration of his lands.
On the steps of Congress Hall on the 17th July 1880 he finally had a heart attack and died - a dead beggar with a treatise in his pocket which according to law he could claim the greatest fortune in the history of the World!!!!
The other eleven moments in History are equally amazing - A GREAT WRITER!!!!

Captivating reading by a most gifted writer

Each of these historical miniatures is a gem in its own right. Some tell of those who failed miserably when thrust by chance or choice on the world stage while others tell of those who seized the moment and succeeded in their life quest, sometimes going far beyond what even they had envisioned for themselves. This is my introduction to Zweig and I'll go from this to his history of Marie Antoinette.

Vintage Zweig to Cure Insomnia

What a nice surprise! Another example of the versatility of Stefan Zweig -- who wrote three hours a day with novellas, essays, historical commentaries throughout his career, even on the day he decided to die. This book tells stories of twelve historical moments where a decision was made that changed the world. As a confirmed insomniac I found the stories a perfect cure for re-setting the brain -- short and intriguing --and helping the reader fall asleep again.

Trader Vic's Bartending Guide - A Classic Reference to the Golden Age of Mixed Drinks, Printing of 1972

This is a `must have' guide to classic drinks from the Golden Age of mixed drinks, the 1950s to 1960s. Every drink aficionado or bartender should study this and have this in their library. I absolutely guarantee that you will make 10 fold in tips when you suggest one of these classic drinks along with the story. For example, are you familiar with the PB2Y2? - a great classic from WWII and a great tip maker. This book is not just about drinks, but gives tips on the ins and outs of bartending and what brings in the tips.

I quote from the preface which gives no better recommendation for this book and is completely true. Quote: "Most bartenders' guides can tell you - along with a few pertinent remarks on mixing drinks, chilling and serving wines, and a thousand or so recipes for drinks which no sane person would ever drink - the signs of the zodiac, how to take spots off your suit, ....... This book is unique...This is intended to be mainly a guide for professional bartenders." Unquote.

For the professional bartender or the amateur mixologist, this book is a keeper. I know I have had a copy of this book and used it for the last 37 years.

I am recommending the 1972 edition with which I am intimately familiar with. Later editions may be watered down or updated to be more `in vogue or hip'. You will not regret buying this book.

If you want to know how the Middle East got all messed up. Study WWI, YES that is WWI.

good account of a very important period in world history. People don't realize that a lot of the problems occurring in the middle east are a result of the aftermath of WWI. Yes that is right, Middle East and WWI. Buy it and learn why. You can also get the series of "The Young Indiana Jones." A very entertaining way to learn about the period and it actually is very historical accurate, except of course the Indiana Jones character. It is a great way to teach as it uses the fictional Indiana Jones to tell accurate stories about the Mexican Revolution and gong on through WWI to include the little discussed Middle East theater and post WWI communist issues.

About the Author
Kentetsu Takamori has lectured throughout Japan and worldwide on Buddhism. He is the author of several bestselling titles in Japanese and the chair of the Buddhist organization Jodo Shinshu Shinrankai. Daiji Akehashi is a psychotherapist and the author of several best-selling titles in Japanese on child raising. Master Shinran surely declared the achivement of the real purpose of human being at 29 years old, and we can also achieve.

This book is the teaching of Master Shinran, one of the most popluar Buddhist in Japan.
Many people believe that human being is special of all life, but are you able to explain why and persuade others?
Perhaps many people answer the question according to others' word or books not from their experiences.
But, Master Shinran is different from it. He clearly stated that he achieved the real purpose of human being at 29 years old because the teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha leads him.
He teaches all people that they also can achieve it when they are alive, and thus no matter how hard your life may be, you must live untill you accomplish the purpose, which is the same as Shakyamuni really would like to tell us.
He understands what is the root of suffering of human and the eternal happiness and he taught many people at that time, which leads to one of most popular person in Japan even in modern age.
Therefore, this book tells us them in detail.

Great Images Good Read

As a newbie diecast race car collector, I need good reference material to be able to identify and familiarize myself with a plethora of race cars, especially the more obscure and forgotten race cars of yore. Actual photographs are indispensable for this purpose but not always helpful in scrutinizing car details, an aspect in which I find well rendered, accurate illustrations particularly helpful, if not just plain nicer to look at. This book Mythical Formula One has those illustrations. They are cleanly and painstakingly made, and accurate as far as I can see. They are a joy to behold.

But wait. The beauty of this book does not stop there. The truth is, I was reluctant at first to buy the book because the word "Mythical" in its title led me to suspect it might only be another repository of the usual popular and famous cars like Lauda's Ferrari 312 T2 or Senna's Lotus 99T. Illustrations of these cars abound everywhere. While this book does these cars justice, it lunges for the trophy by including less known and downright obscure (but still historically interesting) cars. Take the Rebaque HR100, Brett Lunger's McLaren M23 and Lella Lombardi's March 751 as but three examples.

Lastly, this book makes for a good read. Correa projects himself not only as a talented artist and knowledgeable F1 aficionado, but a witty one as well. History is not just retold, technical specifications are not just spewed out. They are presented in interesting context that lead one to see them in a new light. Chew on these subtitles to whet your appetite: The Weaker Sex? (Divina Galica), Arrogant Noses (Tyrell 019), and Long Live the Depression (Lotus 79).

I am not claiming to have read hundreds of F1 books and will not compare this one with any. What I will claim is I enjoy this book and will proudly show it to my fellow collectors. Too bad it is not an autographed edition.

Horrible translation into English

The artwork is nice, but very "flat" looking, in other words it had a lack of shading and detail. The book is oddly organized, and is only somewhat chronological. What really turned me off, however, was the horrible translation into English. The grammar was so peculiar that it actually gave me a headache while reading it. I had to read and reread to really grasp the essence of what he is saying. I speak some Spanish, and the grammar still looked odd even had it been a word-for-word literal translation. I would not have given it more than 4 stars had the text been correct, but as written, 3 stars is generous.
I respect the author for trying to put this together, and I certainly don't intend to return it, but the art wasn't good enough to make it a coffee-table book, and the text wasn't good enough to make it a historical reference.

Mystic: An AWESOME Follow-Up to Nightblade!

Mystic is an EXCELLENT follow-up to Nightblade (see my review). In Mystic, the reader gets to know more about the main characters (Loren and Xain in particular), but Robinson does a wonderful job of not giving *everything* away. As in Nightblade, the action in Mystic never really lets up. The main characters are constantly striving towards specific goals, thus making the reading experience very exciting and suspenseful. I finished Mystic over the course of only three days: I couldn't put it down! Also, in Mystic, the intrigue factor is considerably "upped." It will be interesting to see how some of the subplots Robinson introduces in Mystic resolve themselves in the later books. I very much look forward to the next installment in The Nightblade Series! One thing I would love to see in the next book is a map of the Nine Kingdoms. As I said in my review of Nightblade, I think that Robinson's writing is on par with many of the fantasy novels that are on the bestseller lists.

A difficult decision.

My rating was a difficult decision. I am enthralled with the story line but this issue is so full of editing errors it was distracting. I will continue to read each release but home more care is taken in the process in future releases.

Roller Coaster of a Read

I love this storyline. The characters are well fleshed out, and I find myself loving or hating them, rarely not caring about them. In Loren's case, unfortunately, there is a bit of hate there, caused by her seemingly smug and holier-than-thou attitude. Of course, that hate could be turned inward at the girl who once knew everything...

Mr. Garrett Robinson is doing a lively job of keeping this story entertaining and tortuous. There are not many things better than a roller coaster read that you don't want to end.

Starts in fire, ends in water; a story of the horrors we inflict and the promise of redemption. Astonishing.

Homegoing begins in fire, as a house slave sets herself free by burning her master's African village to the ground, and ends in the ocean, as two of her two descendants - from two completely different lineages - find, finally, perhaps, a sort of reconciliation. In between, Ms. Gyasi traces the entire history of Africa and African-Americans. For the slave, Maame, had two daughters: the daughter of her captor, who she left behind in the burning village; and the daughter of her real husband. Effia and Esi grow up in warring villages, each only a distant rumor to the other, and they take wildly different paths.

Effia is sold to a white British lord, living in Africa to negotiate the slave trade, and she spurs a line of descendants who grapple with the impact of the slave trade within Africa. The story of how slavery began in Africa is not one I knew well, and it was heartbreaking and jarring, to learn how the different tribes stalked and captured each other, selling rival sons and daughters and wives to the British, fueling the trade.

Esi is herself captured, and kept in the dungeon of the Castle where her sister lives as the "wench" wife of a British trader, until she is sent through the Middle Passage to America, into slavery. The story of Esi's life in the dungeon, waiting to be shipped she knows not where, like every bit of the book, is so detailed and rich and true that it is astonishing to realize the author is only 26 years old. This book could easily be a lifetime achievement, and instead it is just the beginning of what I imagine will be an amazing body of work.

Homegoing has many, many, many strengths, and perhaps just one weakness. The strengths are found in the story, and in the writing. It is a glory of riches. From the wars between the Asante and Esperante tribes in Africa in the 1700s to the Middle Passage to the slave plantations to life as a freeman in the North to the villages of Africa in the 1800s, to Harlem, through to the impact of the prison culture and drug culture of modern day America, the scope of this book is astonishing. And it is only 300 pages long.

My one wish with the book is that it started to feel a little bit that I was getting a glimpse of a life, when I wanted more. In some ways, the book is a series of interlocking short stories: every chapter is the story of one character, representing that generation There are 14 chapters, I think; seven generations, and Esi, Effia and each of their descendants get one story per generation. So we see Esi in the Dungeon, and on the Middle Passage, but then we do not see her again. We hear from her daughter, Ness, that Esi in America was known as "Frownie" because she never smiled, and that when Ness was born, there was a strange sound heard, which some suspect was the sound of Esi laughing because it was never heard before or since. I cared for Esi, and wished we had heard more of her story after she reached America. Similarly, Ness herself represents the story of slavery, but we only have about 20 pages with her. Those pages are wisely used - I fell in love with her and with Sam, her proud African husband - but again, it is gone so quickly. It was hard not to feel some frustration; these characters and stories started to feel almost wasted, so much richness that we just didn't get a chance to explore.

I came to understand that Ms. Gyasi is telling the story not of one person, or even one family, but instead, tracing a much larger theme, and arc, of the cost of cruelty, and the redeeming power of sacrificial love. The story begins with a slave escaping (an African slave escaping from an African village), and ends hundreds of years later, as two of that slave's descendants return to the village, and to the ocean. It is a promise of healing through the most horrible crimes, for which the most horrible price is paid. On some level, it is so much more powerful than yet another story about a family. And yet - I cared so much for these people, I wish I had known them a bit more. But maybe that is the point as well.

Read it for the history

I am giving this book 3 1/2 stars. This is the 3rd book I have read recently which spans several centuries and many generations of more than one family tree. Books written in this vein have too many characters to even keep track of or remember, let alone to get really involved with. There are many interesting stories and characters who would have been enough for one whole book dedicated to their story alone, but as soon as I got interested in their story, the author was off to a different character and place. I find I am just not able to get swept away by this style of multigenerational historical writing.

As others have mentioned, the first half or 2/3rds of the book are the most engaging. The rest of it pales in comparison.

This is written well enough and the subject matter is relevant and important but I think it was an overly ambitious concept that did not quite gel. Still, in all, there were enough good stories and enough important history that the book is worth reading for that alone.

My favorite quote from Homegoing is “We believe the one who has the power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So, when you study history, you must always ask yourself, whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth?”

In this book Yaa Gyasi is telling her story of the history of her people, and for this, I highly applaud her. And I do recommend this book.

The best David Walliams book so far!

I like this book because it is sooooo funny and doesn't get boring. I also like it because it was really easy to understand.

It is only a 4 star because the Rat burger book could have more illustrations (it has far less than Boy in a Dress) because some bits I understand but I wanted to see how Tony Ross would picture it.

Give Walliams A Try; He's Wicked Good

David Walliams is the biggest thing going right now in British kid books. He has a half dozen hits circulating through every children's library in the Kingdom. The books haven't yet been published in the United States and it used to be that you had to buy them from amazon.uk. Now there are a lot of new and used copies around. Almost all of them ship from the U.K., but the shipping charges are modest enough that, if you're willing to tolerate the delay in international shipping, they are reasonably available.

And it really is worth it to give a Walliams book a try. In the spirit of Roald Dahl and a few other contemporary kid book writers, these books have an undercurrent of bracing and macabre dark humor. (With titles like "Demon Dentist", "Gangsta Granny", and "Awful Auntie", you are forewarned.) It has become clear to me that readers in the U.K. are quite happy to expose their kids to darker and more ironic offerings than American kids may be used to. But of course kids have a much greater tolerance for dark humor than we tend to give them credit for, and the Walliams books have certainly been well received by the grandkids I've experimented on.

This book, (his fifth), is classic Walliams. Creepy adults are engaged in creepy misdemeanors and gimlet eyed, resourceful and plucky kids have to uncover the shenanigans and save the day. With a horrible stepmom, a terrible bully, and a downright evil burger chef with eyes for pet rats, our heroine Zoe has her work cut out for her. But Zoe is smart and no nonsense, and nobody can have her pet rat.

The book alternates among funny set pieces, quiet and touching bits, action, adventure, sad bits, gore, and comedy wickedness, all presented with a deadpan delivery and a twinkle in the eye. How can that not be a good and refreshing change of pace for a young reader? (P.S.: It also has a touching, upbeat, happy ending.)
