A thorough, engaging account of Israel's crucial role in 4,000 years of world history, ideology, religion, and politics, Israel in World Relations provides one of the most thorough and balanced resources now available for understanding the issues in the Middle East today. With its emphasis on critical thinking, respect for fact, and logical thought, it encourages readers to consider what qualifies as truth, and it shows them how to apply those criteria to the complicated and often emotional topic of Israel. Among the challenging questions it addresses are the following: What counts as history? Is the Jewish claim that there was a Temple in Jerusalem objectively justifiable? Is there such a thing as a "Jewish people"? Are today's Jewish people connected to the ancient Israelites? What is democracy? Can a Jewish state be democratic? Why has peace been so elusive between Israel and its neighbors? What does international law say about sovereignty over Jerusalem? Are the land-for-peace and two-state solutions practical strategies for peace between Israel and the Palestinian Authority? What is a just war? Was Israel's incursion into Gaza in 2009 "just"? What is the real Israel-human rights abuser or humanitarian nation? The book shows why the answers to these questions are relevant to our understanding of world relations and to our own personal identity.

Fantastic read, important information.
By SuperReader9
I found this to be an excellent read. Accessible and yet intensely academic, this book should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in the Middle East, history or Israel/Palestine.

The Legal Foundation of the State of Israel
By Howard Hoffman
Anyone who wants the real background on the legal basis for the State of Israel should read this book. In fact, anyone with any interest in the conflict in the Middle East, especially those who question the legitimacy of the Jewish State, should read this book. Richard Bass goes to the original sources. What becomes especially clear is that the State of Israel should have been open to mass immigration of Jews from Europe all during the period from 1920 up until the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. This was the period of the British Mandate of Palestine, when the British were entrusted with the trusteeship of what is now Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Jordan. After they broke off 70% of the land for an Arab state, Jordan, the entire remaining land was required to have virtually unlimited Jewish immigration. The Arabs would have become a minority, with their religious and human rights protected, in a Jewish State. Instead, the British bowed to the demands of Arab agitators and stopped Jewish immigration to a trickle. Many of the millions who perished in the Holocaust could have been saved and the State of Israel could have been born a lot sooner. The Arabs who remained would have been a lot better off than they are today, whether they live in the West Bank, Gaza, Syria, or wherever. Those Arabs who remained, in fact, became Israeli citizens and enjoy more freedom and more rights than most Arabs in any country.
