The Beginner's Guide to Darkness. By Geoff Thompson

There is an animation movie called `Nocturna' which tells the story of a little boy Tim who is afraid of the dark. After being bullied by his fellow orphans he runs out and flees to the roof as up there he has the light from the stars. His fear of the dark however created a huge shadow that extinguishes all the light. The creatures of the night try to have Tim to overcome his fear before it's all too late. At the very last moment Tim realises that all he has to do is to embrace his fear to make it disappear as without him fearing it, it can't exist.

Now what does this animation have to do with this book, written by Geoff Thompson, a world-class martial artist, filmmaker, author and guru that started off as being a depressed man who gradually embraced his darkness facing down all his fears which catapulted him into Coventry's violent nightlife of the 80's as a doorman?

To quote Pat Morita, the actor that plays Miyagi Sensei in the Karate kid the next generation: `The answer is only important when you ask the right question'. In the question above I have already embedded the answer.

About the Author

Natalie Canavor is a business writer, author and communications consultant whose background includes journalism, magazine editing and public relations. Throughout her career she has originated programs to share the benefits of good writing. Today she conducts workshops on writing-for-results for business audiences and teaches Corporate Communications Writing at New York University.

A specialist in strategic messaging, she helps businesses tell their stories effectively through print and online media. Her own byline has appeared on hundreds of features and columns in the New York Times, Newsday, Communication World and a host of business and technical publications. Canavor's text follows the advice she describes -- be clear, concise, and know your audience. As a college student reading this for a three week course on public relations writing, I felt my needs were addressed. Rarely would I drift to social media or Netflix reading her chapters on personalizing emails, finding the correct tone and organizing professional writing. While the subject in itself is riveting, Canavor's enthusiastic voice and use of relevant examples connected my professional goals to her text, leaving me engaged and knowledgeable by the last sentence. About the Author
Andrea Lunsford, Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English emerita and former Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, joined the Stanford faculty in 2000. Prior to this appointment, Lunsford was Distinguished Professor of English at The Ohio State University (1986-2000). She has also been Associate Professor and Director of Writing at the University of British Columbia (1977-86). Currently a member of the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English, Professor Lunsford earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and completed her Ph.D. in English at The Ohio State University (1977).
Professor Lunsford's scholarly interests include contemporary rhetorical theory, women and the history of rhetoric, collaboration and collaborative writing, current cultures of writing, intellectual property and composing, style, and technologies of writing. She has written or coauthored many books, including Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse; Singular Texts/Plural Authors: Perspectives on Collaborative Writing; and Reclaiming Rhetorica: Women in the History of Rhetoric, as well as numerous chapters and articles. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, she is the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, The Everyday Writer, EasyWriter, and Writing in Action; the co-author (with John Ruszkiewicz) of Everything’s an Argument and (with John Ruszkiewicz and Keith Walters) of Everything’s an Argument with Readings; and the co-author (with Lisa Ede) of Writing Together: Collaboration in Theory and Practice.
Professor Lunsford has conducted workshops on writing and program reviews at dozens of North American universities, served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, as Chair of the Modern Language Association Division on Writing, and as a member of the MLA Executive Council.
John J. Ruszkiewicz is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he has taught literature, rhetoric, and writing for more than thirty-five years. A winner of the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Rhetoric and Writing in 1993 and directed the unit from 2001-05. He has also served as president of the Conference of College Teachers of English (CCTE) of Texas, which gave him its Frances Hern�ndez Teacher—Scholar Award in 2012. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is coauthor, with Andrea Lunsford, of Everything’s An Argument; coauthor, with Jay T. Dolmage, of How to Write Anything with Readings; and the author of How To Write Anything and A Reader's Guide to College Writing.

A solid choice for first-year composition

Essentially, the 7th ed isn't vastly different from the 6th ed. This is the compact edition WITHOUT ADDITIONAL READINGS. If you're ordering this book, make sure that you purchase the right edition: (i) with additional readings OR (ii) without additional readings. There's about a $30 difference in cost. Overall, this edition has been updated (brief readings, examples, references) to maintain social relevance and currency. 4 stars. I like this book a lot but don't love it. In comparison to other critical thinking and rhetorical persuasion textbooks, this is a solid choice (others include Barnet/Bedau, Rottenberg, and Crusius). This text focuses more on rhetoric than argument theory.

The size and format is perfect. Not textbook clunky. Easy to carry and walk around with. Many college students report that the book is accessible, informative, interesting, and "easy to read." Also, they appreciate the graphics. The book is written at a ninth grade reading comprehension level (as are most entry level/introductory/survey college textbooks). This book is appropriate for transfer-level composition and/or critical thinking. As such, it's also appropriate for high school AP level classes.

Previous Amazon reviewers complained of a so-called political agenda in the sixth edition. I haven't found that to be true. The instruction + brief readings are meant to have a rhetorical effect to illicit analytical response. As readers, we're expected to identify political language, bias, etc and ANALYZE, CRITIQUE, AND EVALUATE it--the good, bad, and ugly. The authors are nationally recognized experts in rhetoric and composition. Thus, the instruction + readings are intended for THINKING and WRITING. The authors don't peddle a certain political perspective. Rather, they offer diverse perspectives and various types of persuasive discourse on social issues for our evaluation. At the end of the day, it's our choice to be offended by authorial perspectives. I haven't found deliberately offensive material here that reflects poorly on the authors.

This is a sensible, solid choice for composition classes with a rhetorical emphasis. I especially appreciate the chapter on visual rhetoric. Adequately fulfills the WPA outcomes for first-year comp. Recommended. A- / B+

Fleming's latest picture book pays a joyful, noisy visit to the farm. A bouncy, rhyming text places various animals in their natural surroundings and gives voice to the sounds they make, e.g., "Hens in the henhouse, cluck, cluck, cluck / Pigs in the wallow, muck, muck, muck." In a mostly visual--though gratuitous--subplot, a lone white goose accompanies the reader from page to page, and a textual aside occasionally asks, "But where's Goose?" Fleming's ( In the Small, Small Pond ) by now familiar pulp-painting style continues to evolve. Coffee grounds, oats and burlap add texture and depth to her zesty, full-bodied color-scheme, while a thick black typeface works well as a design element, scattering onomatopoeic words at different angles across the pages. The penultimate spread, which features a cacophony of text and hardly any figures, successfully sums up the spirit of the proceedings. In some cases, the in-your-face perspectives may need a bit of clarification for the youngest readers, but the volume as a whole delivers a hefty helping of rowdy fun. Ages 2-6.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Roosters, cows, crows, hens, kittens, etc., noisly go about their barnyard business except for Goose, who silently flits through each scene chasing an elusive butterfly. She finally makes herself heard on the last double-page spread. Strong rhythm and rhyme, plus fun onomatopoeic animal sounds, demand reading aloud. But even more delightful than the engaging text are Fleming's spectacular illustrations, created by pouring cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils. They create realistically textured, bold, bright settings for the whimsical critters to romp through. Intimate perspectives (tucked in the hay loft at kitten's-eye level, wallowing with mud-mucking pigs), reminiscent of In the Tall, Tall Grass (Holt, 1991), make Barnyard Banter one more plus to Fleming's already impressive collection.

Ages 3-6. Like Fleming's other picture books, this is a lot of noisy fun. Here, her handmade paper pictures are brighter and grittier, with coffee grounds and real oats worked into the pulp. As for the story, a pure white goose tours a farm visiting her friends, and each responds appropriately. Large, thick black lettering scattered around the double-page spreads shouts out, "Hee haw, haw . . . caw, caw, caw." Readers will watch for Goose in each picture; expect a lot of honking by story's end. As usual, Fleming has created another original, excitingly designed book for the youngest children. We love Shout Shout it OUT so we gave this book a try... The pictures are very abstract and somewhat "dark" which I can appreciate but may be lost on small children. Regardless of that, it is another book for our growing library and we are grateful to be fortunate enough to add it to the shelves!!

I began reading this book to my three-month old daughter (she is now six months old), and she loves it each time. We read it daily. The rhyming is strong and simple; the repetition makes my little girl laugh. She gets excited and babbles from the first page. It's actually fun to read aloud, since "Moo Moo Moo" and "Caw Caw Caw" and "Squeak Squeak Squeak" are fun sounds to make (along with all the other sounds). What is especially sweet is that Goose -- or some part of her -- is on every panel, and she is chasing a little yellow butterfly throughout the book. The repetition of "But where's Goose?" provides the opportunity to look for her and point out other animals. The artwork is eye-catching, vivid, and sophisticated enough for an adult to appreciate too. This one belongs on every child's bookshelf, and I'll be buying Fleming's other books as well.

A Big Hit from Baby to Toddler

Barnyard Banter is one of our standard gifts for new parents. Even as a baby, our son loved the funny noises and the rhymes and wiggled with anticipation with every "but where's goose?" The artwork is fun with a nice search for the goose on every page once you child is a little older. Great book for the early years of parenting.
